| Resumen |
Laparoscopic pericystectomy (LP) could be of benefit in a subset of patients with hepatic echinococcosis (HE). However, there are few reports that have evaluated the long-term results. The aim of this study was to determine postoperative morbidity (POM) and recurrence in patients with HE who underwent LP with a follow-up period of at least 60 months. Case series with follow-up of patients with HE who underwent LP, at the Department of Surgery, Universidad de La Frontera, Chile, with a minimum follow-up of 60 months. Patients were treated between 2008 and 2015. The outcome variables were POM and recurrence. Other variables of interest were surgical time, conversion rate, hospital stay, and biliary leak rate. Descriptive statistics were used. Thirty-nine patients (74.4% women), with a mean age of 40.8 years, underwent the procedure (LP). The most frequent location was segments III and II-III (38.5%). The mean diameter cyst was 10.9 cm. Mean surgical time, conversion rate, hospital stay, and biliary leak rate was 91.6 min, 0.0%, 1.8 days, and 0.0% respectively. POM was 7.8% (seroma, atelectasis, and incisional hernia). With a median follow-up of 91 months, a recurrence of 2.6% was verified. Laparoscopic pericystectomy in patients with hepatic echinococcosis, when applied with selective criteria, can be a useful alternative, because its results in terms of postoperative morbidity and recurrence are comparable with open surgery series in similar follow-up time.
