Resumen	Samples of two Andisols and two Ultisols from southern Chile were incubated with acid or with lime for up to 60 d at 25 degrees C or for 1 day at 40 degrees C or at 60 degrees C. The changes in positive and negative charge were measured. The Andisols reacted slowly at 25 degrees C. They lost protons to the solution at high pH, thus increasing the negative charge on the soils,and decreasing the pH of the solution. They gained protons at low pH, thus increasing the positive charge on the soils and increasing the pH of the solution. The Ultisols reacted more quickly but again charge and pH changed through time. For all samples, the rate of reaction was increased by incubating at 60 degrees C. Brief incubation at 60 degrees C produces a similar relation to that obtained after longer incubation at 25 degrees C. This provides a convenient means by which measurements can be made more quickly.#Se incubaron muestras de dos Andisoles y dos Ultisoles del sur de Chile con ácido o cal durante un máximo de 60 días a 25 °C, o durante un día a 40 °C o a 60 °C. Se midieron los cambios en la carga positiva y negativa. Los Andisoles reaccionaron lentamente a 25 °C. Perdieron protones a la solución a pH alto, aumentando así la carga negativa en los suelos y disminuyendo el pH de la solución. Ganaron protones a pH bajo, aumentando así la carga positiva en los suelos y aumentando el pH de la solución. Los Ultisoles reaccionaron más rápidamente, pero nuevamente la carga y el pH cambiaron con el tiempo. Para todas las muestras, la velocidad de reacción aumentó al incubar a 60 °C. Una incubación breve a 60 °C produce una relación similar a la obtenida después de una incubación más prolongada a 25 °C.
