Resumen	The effluents coming from the cellulose industry produce different types of environmental impact, which can be considered as related with its solids content, organic charge, toxicity and colour. The anaerobic biological treatments are a good alternative for the treatment of these liquid wastes, nevertheless the compounds contained in the effluents of the cellulose industry may result toxic for the anaerobic bacteria and/or hardly biodegradable. The main objective of this work is to analyse the incidence of the organic compounds produced by the paper and paste industry, with regard to the toxicity and anaerobic biodegradataion of their effluents, and to review the technologies available for their treatment.#Los efluentes de la industria de la celulosa generan diversos impactos ambientales, relacionados con su contenido de sólidos, carga orgánica, toxicidad y color. Los tratamientos biológicos anaeróbicos constituyen una buena alternativa para el tratamiento de estos residuos líquidos; sin embargo, los compuestos presentes en los efluentes de la industria de la celulosa pueden resultar tóxicos para las bacterias anaeróbicas o ser difícilmente biodegradables. El objetivo principal de este trabajo es analizar la incidencia de los compuestos orgánicos producidos por la industria del papel y la pasta, en relación con la toxicidad y la biodegradación anaeróbica de sus efluentes, y revisar las tecnologías disponibles para su tratamiento.
