Seasonal changes in the photosynthetic performance of two evergreen Nothofagus species in south central Chile

Las especies perennes Nothofagits dombeyi y Nothofagus nitida son miembros importantes de la selva templada chilena. Rara vez crecen juntas en la naturaleza. Nothofagus nitida es más susceptible al exceso de luz y a la sequía que N. dombeyi. Postulamos que las diferentes propiedades del aparato fotosintético en condiciones de jardín común de estas especies podrían explicar sus preferencias de hábitat contrastantes. Se estudiaron las dos especies que crecían en un jardín común en el centro-sur de Chile. La eficiencia fotoquímica óptima (Fv/Fm) de ambas especies se mantuvo dentro de los valores normales (aproximadamente 0,8) con la excepción de una disminución en N. dombeyi al mediodía en verano, lo que sugiere una reducción reversible en la eficiencia fotoquímica del fotosistema II (PSII). Durante el verano, la eficiencia fotoquímica efectiva (Phi(psII)), el apagamiento fotoquímico (qP), la fotosíntesis (A(max)), la conductancia estomática (gs) y las tasas de transpiración (E) en N. dombeyi fueron mayores que en N. nitida. En verano, en N. dombeyi, se observaron los mayores incrementos en el contenido de pigmentos fotoprotectores (zeaxantina + antelaxantina y luteína) entre el amanecer y el mediodía. En invierno, en N. nitida, se encontró una retención nocturna de pigmentos disipativos, sin una disminución en Fv/Fm. Los resultados sugieren que N. dombeyi mostró un mejor desempeño fotosintético que N. nitida bajo condiciones de alta luminosidad, alta temperatura y sequedad. Estos datos respaldan el carácter pionero de N. dombeyi y las propiedades de semi-tolerancia a la sombra y la distribución más restringida de N. nitida. Estas características fotosintéticas, junto con sus diferencias en la resistencia a la congelación y a las inundaciones, podrían deberse a la separación de sus hábitats.#The evergreen Nothofagits dombeyi and Nothofagus nitida are important members of the temperate Chilean rainforest. They seldom grow together in nature. Nothofagus nitida is more susceptible to excess light and drought than N. dombeyi. We postulate that the different properties of the photosynthetic apparatus under common garden conditions of these species could explain their contrasting habitat preferences. The two species growing in a common garden in south central Chile were studied. The optimal photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) of both species remained within normal values (approximate to 0.8) with the exception of a decrease in N. dombeyi at midday in summer, suggesting reversible reduction in photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (PSII), During summer the effective photochemical efficiency (Phi(psII)), photochemical quenching (qP), photosynthesis (A(max)) stomatal conductance (gs) and transpiration rates (E) in N. dombevi were higher than in N. nitida. The highest increments in photoprotective pigments (zeaxanthin + anthelaxanthin and lutein) contents between predawn and midday were obtained in summer in N. dombeyi. In N. nitida a nocturnal retention of dissipative pigments, without a decrease in Fv/Fm, was found in winter. The results suggest that N. dombeyi showed a better photosynthetic performance than N. nitida under high light, high temperature, and drier conditions. These data support are consistent with the pioneer character of N. dombeyi and the semi-tolerant shade properties and more restricted distribution of N. nitida. These photosynthetic characteristics, along with their freezing and flooding resistance differences, may result from their habitat separation.
