Photochemical efficiency of PSII and photoprotective pigments in seedlings and adults of two Proteaceae with different shade tolerance from the Chilean temperate rain forest

Resumen	Se estudió la variación estacional en los parámetros de extinción de energía del fotosistema 11 y los pigmentos fotoprotectores en plántulas y adultos de dos especies de Proteaceae: una especie intolerante a la sombra (Embotrium coccineum J.R. et G. Forster) y una especie tolerante a la sombra (Lomatia ferruginea (Cav.) R. Br.). Postulamos que la especie intolerante a la sombra favorece los procesos impulsados por energía fotoquímica (principalmente CO, asimilación), mientras que la especie tolerante a la sombra exhibe una mayor disipación de energía no fotoquímica en condiciones desfavorables. Además, la especie tolerante a la sombra presenta menores variaciones estacionales en estos parámetros que la especie intolerante a la sombra. Las diferencias en la disipación de energía deberían ser más evidentes en las plántulas que en los adultos debido a sus ambientes de luz contrastantes y las temperaturas son más evidentes en esta etapa. Su eficiencia fotoquímica máxima (Fv/Fm) estuvo en el rango de 0,70-0,83. La eficiencia fotoquímica efectiva (Phi PSII), el apagamiento fotoquímico (qP) y la tasa de transporte de electrones (ETR) fueron mayores en las plántulas de E. coccineum que en las plántulas de L. ferruginea. Los adultos mostraron parámetros de apagamiento de energía fotoquímica más altos que las plántulas. El apagamiento no fotoquímico (NPQ) fue frecuentemente similar entre períodos diarios, estaciones, especies y etapas de desarrollo, con la excepción del apagamiento no fotoquímico más bajo en las plántulas de E. coccineum en verano. Las plántulas y los adultos mostraron un mayor contenido de pool del ciclo de xantofilas al mediodía en verano que en invierno, mientras que el pool de anteraxantina + zeaxantina siempre fue mayor al mediodía. La luteína aumentó más durante el verano. Por lo tanto, las plántulas y los adultos de E. coccineum mantuvieron una fotosíntesis alta, una mayor fracción de centros de reacción abiertos y un ETR más alto que la especie tolerante a la sombra. Estas diferencias son coherentes con las funciones ecológicas de ambas especies: un carácter pionero, una mayor tasa de crecimiento y una amplia distribución altitudinal y latitudinal de E. coccineum en comparación con L. ferruginea.#The seasonal variation in energy quenching parameters of photosystem 11 and photoprotective pigments were studied in seedlings and adults of two Proteaceae: a shade-intolerant species (Embotrium coccineum J.R. et G. Forster) and a shade-tolerant species (Lomatia ferruginea (Cav.) R. Br.). Their maximal photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) was in the range 0.70-0.83. The effective photochemical efficiency (Phi PSII), photochemical quenching (qP), and electron transport rate (ETR) were higher in seedlings of E. coccineum than in seedlings of L. ferruginea. Adults showed higher photochemical energy quenching parameters than seedlings. Non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) was frequently similar between daily periods, seasons, species, and developmental stages, with the exception of the lowest non-photochemical quenching in seedlings of E. coccineum in summer. Seedlings and adults showed a larger xanthophyll cycle pool content at midday in summer than in winter, while the pool of antheraxanthin + zeaxanthin was always higher at midday. Lutein increased the most during summer. Thus, E. coccineum seedlings and adults maintained high photosynthesis, a higher fraction of open reaction centres, and higher ETR than the shade tolerant species. These differences are consistent with the ecological functions of both species: a pioneer character, higher growth rate, and wide altitudinal and latitudinal distribution of E. coccineum compared to L.ferruginea.
