Resumen	Wood processing effluents contain different types of phenolic compounds, from simple monomers to high molecular weight (MW) polyphenolic polymers, that can inhibit wastewater treatment. This work presents a comparative study of the methanogenic toxicity produced by three wood processing effluents (hardboard, fiberboard and BKME (kraft mill effluent)) using Pinus radiata, Eucalyptus and Tepa as feedstock (the last one being a native Chilean tree species). This study evaluates the influence of non-adapted granular and adapted flocculent sludge on forest industrial wastewater treatment as well as continuous anaerobic biodegradation of hardboard processing effluent using the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB). The adapted biomass (flocculent sludge) did not show any lag-phase signs. The 50% IC (the concentration causing 50% inhibition of methanogenic activity) was 4.3 g COD-effluent (chemical oxygen demand (COD)-of the effluent)/l and 2.8 g COD-effluent/l for the flocculent sludge and the granular sludge, respectively. The UASB system worked at low organic load rates (0.1-0.4 g COD/l d) with the COD removal ranging between 10 and 30%, and color removal did not occur under anaerobic conditions due to high MW. Los efluentes del procesamiento de madera contienen diferentes tipos de compuestos fenólicos, desde monómeros simples hasta polímeros polifenólicos de alto peso molecular (PM), que pueden inhibir el tratamiento de aguas residuales. Este trabajo presenta un estudio comparativo de la toxicidad metanogénica producida por tres efluentes del procesamiento de madera (tablero duro, tablero de fibra y BKME (efluente de molino kraft)) utilizando Pinus radiata, Eucalyptus y Tepa como materia prima (este último es una especie arbórea nativa de Chile). Este estudio evalúa la influencia del lodo granular no adaptado y el lodo floculento adaptado en el tratamiento de aguas residuales de la industria forestal, así como la biodegradación anaeróbica continua del efluente del procesamiento de tablero duro utilizando el manto de lodo anaeróbico de flujo ascendente (UASB). La biomasa adaptada (lodo floculento) no mostró signos de fase de latencia. La CI50 (la concentración que causa el 50% de inhibición de la actividad metanogénica) fue de 4,3 g DQO-efluente (demanda química de oxígeno (DQO) del efluente)/l y 2,8 g DQO-efluente/l para el lodo floculento y el lodo granular, respectivamente. El sistema UASB funcionó a bajas tasas de carga orgánica (0,1-0,4 g DQO/l d) con una eliminación de DQO que osciló entre el 10 y el 30%, y la eliminación del color no se produjo en condiciones anaeróbicas debido al alto peso molecular.
