Influence of the Processing Parameters on the Thermomechanical Behavior of Recycled Post-Consumer Multilayer Polymer Waste

Multilayer plastic films (MPFs) are widely used in the food industry. Despite its widespread use, the recycling of MPF remains a challenge due to its complex structure. Solvent-based recycling is more complex and costly than conventional mechanical recycling, which remains the most widely used method despite its technical and economic limitations. This study investigates the conventional mechanical recycling of post-consumer MPF without separating its constituent layers. Samples were prepared using a thermal extrusion cycle with the control of temperature, speed and sample size to improve the melt state, homogeneity and mechanical response of the mixture. The results of the physicomechanical characterization in this research study show that the proper selection of the extrusion parameters for a fine multilayer waste of 2 mm particle size, has a positive impact, for instance, on the final maximum strength of the recycled material, demonstrating an increase of up to 40 and 70% in tensile and flexural properties, respectively. The proposed mechanical recycling of post-consumer MPF without separation of its constituents can produce a material with mechanical properties comparable to those of low-density polyethylene and polypropylene. These findings could significantly benefit the recycling industry by reducing plastic pollution and allowing for creating new products with specific mechanical properties tailored for different applications.Las películas plásticas multicapa (MPF) se utilizan ampliamente en la industria alimentaria. A pesar de su uso generalizado, el reciclaje de MPF sigue siendo un desafío debido a su compleja estructura. El reciclaje con solventes es más complejo y costoso que el reciclaje mecánico convencional, que sigue siendo el método más utilizado a pesar de sus limitaciones técnicas y económicas. Este estudio investiga el reciclaje mecánico convencional de MPF posconsumo sin separar sus capas constituyentes. Se prepararon muestras utilizando un ciclo de extrusión térmica con control de temperatura, velocidad y tamaño de muestra para mejorar el estado de fusión, la homogeneidad y la respuesta mecánica de la mezcla. Los resultados de la caracterización físico-mecánica en este estudio de investigación muestran que la selección adecuada de los parámetros de extrusión para un residuo multicapa fino de tamaño de partícula de 2 mm tiene un impacto positivo, por ejemplo, en la resistencia máxima final del material reciclado, demostrando un aumento de hasta el 40 y el 70 % en las propiedades de tracción y flexión, respectivamente. El reciclaje mecánico propuesto de MPF posconsumo sin separación de sus componentes puede producir un material con propiedades mecánicas comparables a las del polietileno de baja densidad y el polipropileno. Estos hallazgos podrían beneficiar significativamente a la industria del reciclaje al reducir la contaminación plástica y permitir la creación de nuevos productos con propiedades mecánicas específicas adaptadas a diferentes aplicaciones.
