Hydraulic and Photosynthetic Performance of Antarctic Plants Under Successive Freeze-Thaw Cycles

Climate change projections predict warming and increased weather variability, mainly in polar regions, altering freeze-thaw patterns. However, the effects of rising temperatures and more frequent freeze-thaw events on the water and CO2 management of Antarctic plants remain unclear. To address this, we conducted a laboratory experiment to investigate how growth temperature (5 degrees C and 15 degrees C) and successive freeze-thaw cycles influence the hydraulic and photosynthetic performance of Deschampsia antarctica (D. antarctica) and Colobanthus quitensis (C. quitensis). Our results showed that warmer conditions improved hydraulic and photosynthetic performance in both species, driven by anatomical adjustments in leaf xylem vessels. Additionally, plants exposed to successive freeze-thaw cycles exhibited a coordinated decline in whole-plant hydraulic conductivity and leaf gas exchange, regardless of growth temperature. The magnitude of changes (%) in photosynthetic traits after freeze-thaw cycles varied between species, with D. antarctica showing similar responses at both growth temperatures, while C. quitensis experienced more pronounced changes at the lower temperature. Overall, these findings suggest that while Antarctic plants benefit from warmer temperatures, repeated freeze-thaw events could disrupt their hydraulic balance and limit photosynthesis, particularly under natural environmental conditions.Las proyecciones del cambio climático predicen un calentamiento y una mayor variabilidad climática, principalmente en las regiones polares, lo que altera los patrones de congelación y descongelación. Sin embargo, los efectos del aumento de las temperaturas y la mayor frecuencia de estos ciclos en la gestión del agua y el CO2 de las plantas antárticas aún no están claros. Para abordar esta cuestión, realizamos un experimento de laboratorio para investigar cómo la temperatura de crecimiento (5 °C y 15 °C) y los sucesivos ciclos de congelación y descongelación influyen en el rendimiento hidráulico y fotosintético de Deschampsia antarctica (D. antarctica) y Colobanthus quitensis (C. quitensis). Nuestros resultados mostraron que las condiciones más cálidas mejoraron el rendimiento hidráulico y fotosintético en ambas especies, debido a ajustes anatómicos en los vasos del xilema foliar. Además, las plantas expuestas a sucesivos ciclos de congelación y descongelación mostraron una disminución coordinada en la conductividad hidráulica de la planta completa y el intercambio de gases foliares, independientemente de la temperatura de crecimiento. La magnitud de los cambios (%) en los rasgos fotosintéticos tras los ciclos de congelación y descongelación varió entre especies: D. antarctica mostró respuestas similares a ambas temperaturas de crecimiento, mientras que C. quitensis experimentó cambios más pronunciados a la temperatura más baja. En general, estos hallazgos sugieren que, si bien las plantas antárticas se benefician de temperaturas más cálidas, los repetidos ciclos de congelación y descongelación podrían alterar su equilibrio hidráulico y limitar la fotosíntesis, especialmente en condiciones ambientales naturales.
