Reliability and Reproducibility of the International Fitness Scale (IFIS) in Children and Adolescents in Chile: An Analysis Through Structural Equation Modeling

This study aimed to describe the reliability and reproducibility of the International Fitness Scale (IFIS) through a structural equation model (SEM) in children and adolescents in Chile. A cross-sectional design was developed with 160 participants (9 to 17 years) from Vi & ntilde

The IFIS was administered twice with a 7-day interval, and assessed the self-perception of general physical fitness, cardiorespiratory fitness, strength, speed/agility, and flexibility. Cronbach's alpha and structural equation model were applied. The results showed that the IFIS demonstrates high reliability (Cronbach's alpha between 0.80 and 0.83). Reproducibility was high (beta = 0.93), with all indirect effects in the SEM being significant. These results were consistent in both the crude model and the sex/age-adjusted model. In conclusion, the IFIS demonstrated high reliability and excellent reproducibility, proving to be a reliable and alternative tool for assessing physical fitness in children and adolescents in Chile.Este estudio tuvo como objetivo describir la confiabilidad y reproducibilidad de la Escala Internacional de Aptitud Física (IFIS) mediante un modelo de ecuaciones estructurales (SEM) en niños y adolescentes en Chile. Se desarrolló un diseño transversal con 160 participantes (de 9 a 17 años) de Viñtilde del Mar, Chile. La IFIS se administró dos veces con un intervalo de 7 días y evaluó la autopercepción de la aptitud física general, la aptitud cardiorrespiratoria, la fuerza, la velocidad/agilidad y la flexibilidad. Se aplicaron el alfa de Cronbach y el modelo de ecuaciones estructurales. Los resultados mostraron que la IFIS demuestra una alta confiabilidad (alfa de Cronbach entre 0,80 y 0,83). La reproducibilidad fue alta (beta = 0,93), y todos los efectos indirectos en el SEM fueron significativos. Estos resultados fueron consistentes tanto en el modelo crudo como en el modelo ajustado por sexo/edad. En conclusión, la IFIS demostró una alta confiabilidad y una excelente reproducibilidad, lo que demuestra que es una herramienta confiable y alternativa para evaluar la aptitud física en niños y adolescentes en Chile.
