Mechanical Performance of Plywood TIE Joints Under Tension and Shear in the WikiHouse Skylark Modular System

The construction sector's environmental footprint is driving the adoption of sustainable modular timber systems. The WikiHouse Skylark is a promising open-source model whose structural reliability depends on the performance of its critical plywood TIE joints. This study presents an experimental investigation of full-scale TIE joints fabricated from 18 mm Pinus radiata plywood in three variants: Standard (STD), Weather-Resistant (HR), and Fire-Resistant (FR). Monotonic tensile and shear tests were conducted to evaluate load-displacement behavior and failure modes. While the mean ultimate strengths varied between panel types, with HR highest in tension (7.7 kN) and FR highest in shear (8.2 kN), the most critical finding was the effect of the treatments on failure mode. The FR treatment induced a brittle fracture with significantly reduced ductility, in contrast to the more ductile tearing observed in STD and HR panels. This highlights a clear strength-ductility trade-off introduced by the fire-retardant treatment, a key consideration for structural design in modular timber construction. This dataset provides an essential empirical foundation for the numerical modeling and design guidelines of WikiHouse TIE joints, advancing the development of resilient and sustainable prefabricated housing.La huella ambiental del sector de la construcción impulsa la adopción de sistemas modulares de madera sostenibles. WikiHouse Skylark es un prometedor modelo de código abierto cuya fiabilidad estructural depende del rendimiento de sus uniones TIE de madera contrachapada, de vital importancia. Este estudio presenta una investigación experimental de uniones TIE a escala real fabricadas con madera contrachapada de Pinus radiata de 18 mm en tres variantes: Estándar (STD), Resistente a la Intemperie (HR) y Resistente al Fuego (FR). Se realizaron ensayos monotónicos de tracción y cizallamiento para evaluar el comportamiento carga-desplazamiento y los modos de fallo. Si bien las resistencias máximas medias variaron entre los tipos de paneles, siendo HR la más alta en tracción (7,7 kN) y FR la más alta en cizallamiento (8,2 kN), el hallazgo más importante fue el efecto de los tratamientos en el modo de fallo. El tratamiento FR indujo una fractura frágil con una ductilidad significativamente reducida, en contraste con el desgarro más dúctil observado en los paneles STD y HR. Esto pone de manifiesto una clara relación de compromiso entre resistencia y ductilidad introducida por el tratamiento ignífugo, una consideración clave para el diseño estructural en la construcción modular de madera. Este conjunto de datos proporciona una base empírica esencial para el modelado numérico y las directrices de diseño de las uniones TIE de WikiHouse, impulsando el desarrollo de viviendas prefabricadas resilientes y sostenibles.
