Native Lactic Acid Bacteria Enterococcus sp. and Lactobacillus sp. Improve Physiological, Biochemical and Fruit Yield of Solanum lycopersicum L. Plants Under Water Deficit

Drought stress poses a significant challenge to sustainable agriculture, especially in regions with limited water availability. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of two native probiotic strains, Enterococcus sp. BB3 and Lactobacillus sp. BB6, on the physiological, biochemical, and yield parameters of tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum L.) under both optimal (100% field capacity) and drought induced (60% field capacity) conditions. The research focused on the strains' potential as plant growth promoting agents and their ability to mitigate drought stress impacts. Greenhouse experiments were conducted to assess the plant growth promoting properties of the two probiotic strains, including auxin production. Key parameters measured included chlorophyll content, chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv'/Fm'), quantum efficiency (Phi PSII), and electron transport rate (ETR), as well as antioxidant activity and lipid peroxidation. Plants treated with the probiotic strains were compared against untreated controls to evaluate their effectiveness under drought conditions. The BB3 strain significantly reduced lipid peroxidation levels by 15% and increased antioxidant activity and total phenols by 20% compared to the drought stressed control, enhancing plant resilience. The BB6 strain improved photosynthetic efficiency, showing a 10% increase in quantum efficiency and electron transport rates relative to controls. Both BB3 and BB6 also promoted auxin production, stimulating root and shoot growth. Under drought conditions, BB3 treated plants showed an 18% increase in fruit weight and a 10% increase in diameter compared to controls, while BB6 improved chlorophyll a and b concentrations by 12% and 15%, respectively, under optimal irrigation. The native probiotic strains Enterococcus sp. BB3 and Lactobacillus sp. BB6 shows promise as bioinoculants for mitigating drought stress in tomato plants. Their application enhanced physiological performance, improved antioxidant and photosynthetic responses, and increased crop yield under water limited conditions. These findings support the integration of lactic acid bacteria into sustainable agricultural practices as a strategy to improve resilience and productivity in water scarce environments.El estrés hídrico representa un desafío significativo para la agricultura sostenible, especialmente en regiones con disponibilidad limitada de agua. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar los efectos de dos cepas probióticas nativas, Enterococcus sp. BB3 y Lactobacillus sp. BB6, sobre los parámetros fisiológicos, bioquímicos y de rendimiento de plantas de tomate (Solanum lycopersicum L.) en condiciones óptimas (100% de capacidad de campo) y de sequía (60% de capacidad de campo). La investigación se centró en el potencial de las cepas como promotores del crecimiento vegetal y su capacidad para mitigar los efectos del estrés hídrico. Se realizaron experimentos en invernadero para evaluar las propiedades promotoras del crecimiento vegetal de las dos cepas probióticas, incluyendo la producción de auxina. Los parámetros clave medidos incluyeron el contenido de clorofila, la fluorescencia de la clorofila (Fv'/Fm'), la eficiencia cuántica (Phi PSII) y la tasa de transporte de electrones (ETR), así como la actividad antioxidante y la peroxidación lipídica. Las plantas tratadas con las cepas probióticas se compararon con controles no tratados para evaluar su efectividad en condiciones de sequía. La cepa BB3 redujo significativamente los niveles de peroxidación lipídica en un 15 % y aumentó la actividad antioxidante y los fenoles totales en un 20 % en comparación con el control sometido a estrés hídrico, mejorando la resiliencia de la planta. La cepa BB6 mejoró la eficiencia fotosintética, mostrando un aumento del 10 % en la eficiencia cuántica y las tasas de transporte de electrones en relación con los controles. Tanto BB3 como BB6 también promovieron la producción de auxina, estimulando el crecimiento de la raíz y el tallo. En condiciones de sequía, las plantas tratadas con BB3 mostraron un aumento del 18 % en el peso del fruto y un aumento del 10 % en el diámetro en comparación con los controles, mientras que BB6 mejoró las concentraciones de clorofila a y b en un 12 % y un 15 %, respectivamente, bajo riego óptimo. Las cepas probióticas nativas Enterococcus sp. BB3 y Lactobacillus sp. BB6 se muestran prometedoras como bioinoculantes para mitigar el estrés hídrico en plantas de tomate. Su aplicación mejoró el rendimiento fisiológico, mejoró las respuestas antioxidantes y fotosintéticas, y aumentó el rendimiento del cultivo en condiciones de limitación hídrica. Estos hallazgos respaldan la integración de bacterias lácticas en prácticas agrícolas sostenibles como estrategia para mejorar la resiliencia y la productividad en entornos con escasez de agua.
