Functional and phylogenetic similarity between native and non-native plant species along an elevational gradient in the central Chilean Andes: No evidence for the preadaptation hypothesis

The preadaptation hypothesis proposed by Darwin states that non-native species phylogenetically close to natives may be successful in the introduced area, as closely related species may exhibit similar adaptations to the environment. In support of this hypothesis, both resident and non-native plant species have been described as sharing conservative functional traits when subject to habitat filtering, including low leaf area and specific leaf area (SLA). The central Chilean Andes, influenced by a Mediterranean-type climate, show opposite elevational gradients of water availability and temperature. In this mountain region, low-elevation drought and high-elevation cold temperatures may promote a conservative growth strategy in coexisting native and non-native plant species, thereby reducing the phylogenetic and functional distances between these two species groups. Here, we tested this hypothesis by studying the phylogenetic and functional similarity between co-occurring native and non-native plant species along a wide elevational gradient. We measured six leaf functional traits in native (N = 91) and non-native (N = 26) plant species from roadside habitats at six elevations (from 1200 to 3600 m a.s.l.) in the central Chilean Andes. The traits comprised leaf area, SLA, leaf dry matter content, leaf thickness, and leaf nitrogen and chlorophyll contents. The mean functional and phylogenetic distances of focal non-native species relative to the native species in the community were calculated. Contrary to our predictions, we found no significant effect of elevation on the functional and phylogenetic distances between native and non-native plant species. Native species showed reduced SLA in habitats under drought conditions and smaller leaves above the tree line. In contrast, non-native species exhibited high leaf area values along the entire elevational gradient and high SLA in habitats affected by summer drought. Synthesis. Our study provides novel evidence of the phylogenetic relatedness and functional differentiation between native and non-native plant species in habitats influenced by summer drought or low-temperature stress in the central Chilean Andes. In these harsh environments, the acquisitive leaf traits found in non-native species suggest that the growth strategy of these species could be affected by disturbance and/or the modification of the environment by nurse plants.La hipótesis de preadaptación propuesta por Darwin postula que las especies no nativas filogenéticamente cercanas a las nativas pueden prosperar en el área introducida, dado que las especies estrechamente relacionadas pueden presentar adaptaciones similares al entorno. En apoyo de esta hipótesis, se ha descrito que tanto las especies de plantas residentes como las no nativas comparten rasgos funcionales conservadores cuando se ven sometidas a filtrado de hábitat, incluyendo una baja área foliar y un área foliar específica (AFE). Los Andes centrales chilenos, influenciados por un clima mediterráneo, presentan gradientes altitudinales opuestos de disponibilidad de agua y temperatura. En esta región montañosa, la sequía en las zonas bajas y las bajas temperaturas en las zonas altas pueden promover una estrategia de crecimiento conservadora en las especies de plantas nativas y no nativas coexistentes, reduciendo así las distancias filogenéticas y funcionales entre estos dos grupos de especies. En este estudio, pusimos a prueba esta hipótesis analizando la similitud filogenética y funcional entre especies de plantas nativas y no nativas coexistentes a lo largo de un amplio gradiente altitudinal. Medimos seis rasgos funcionales de las hojas en especies de plantas nativas (N = 91) y no nativas (N = 26) de hábitats de borde de carretera en seis elevaciones (de 1200 a 3600 m s.n.m.) en los Andes centrales chilenos. Los rasgos comprendieron área foliar, SLA, contenido de materia seca de la hoja, grosor de la hoja y contenidos de nitrógeno y clorofila de la hoja. Se calcularon las distancias funcionales y filogenéticas medias de las especies no nativas focales en relación con las especies nativas en la comunidad. Contrario a nuestras predicciones, no encontramos un efecto significativo de la elevación en las distancias funcionales y filogenéticas entre especies de plantas nativas y no nativas. Las especies nativas mostraron SLA reducida en hábitats bajo condiciones de sequía y hojas más pequeñas por encima del límite arbóreo. Por el contrario, las especies no nativas exhibieron altos valores de área foliar a lo largo de todo el gradiente de elevación y SLA alta en hábitats afectados por la sequía de verano. Síntesis. Nuestro estudio aporta nuevas evidencias sobre la relación filogenética y la diferenciación funcional entre especies vegetales nativas y no nativas en hábitats afectados por la sequía estival o el estrés por bajas temperaturas en los Andes centrales chilenos. En estos entornos hostiles, los rasgos foliares adquisitivos observados en las especies no nativas sugieren que la estrategia de crecimiento de estas especies podría verse afectada por perturbaciones y/o la modificación del ambiente por plantas nodrizas.
