Incorporation of the SDGs in the industrial engineering curriculum and its contribution to the institutional educational model

PurposeQuality education is both a fundamental objective and a powerful mechanism for advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Higher education institutions, in particular, play a vital role in fostering individuals who actively contribute to global sustainability. The purpose of this study is to propose a framework for embedding the SDGs into an Industrial Engineering curriculum, aligning it with the institutional educational model to achieve its overarching goals.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses documentary analysis to review 32 courses from the Industrial Engineering curricula at the Universidad de La Frontera. The analysis identifies subjects that align with the learning outcomes of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and support the implementation of the university's educational model.FindingsThe proposed framework integrates learning outcomes from eight SDGs across 17 courses within the Industrial Engineering curricula. The SDGs most closely aligned with the curricula are SDG 12, Responsible Consumption and Production, and SDG 8, Decent Work and Economic Growth. This alignment demonstrates the compatibility of ESD with the Universidad de La Frontera's educational model, emphasizing the development of agents of change equipped to tackle global challenges.Originality/valueThis analysis highlights the potential of universities to advance ESD while meeting their strategic goals. This study introduces a methodological approach for integrating ESD into academic programs, contributing to the achievement of Goal 4.7 of the UN Agenda 2030 by adapting the curricula of a specific discipline using UNESCO guidelines.Propósito La educación de calidad es tanto un objetivo fundamental como un mecanismo poderoso para avanzar en los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS). Las instituciones de educación superior, en particular, juegan un papel vital en el fomento de individuos que contribuyen activamente a la sostenibilidad global. El propósito de este estudio es proponer un marco para incorporar los ODS en un plan de estudios de Ingeniería Industrial, alineándolo con el modelo educativo institucional para lograr sus objetivos generales. Diseño/metodología/enfoque Este estudio utiliza el análisis documental para revisar 32 cursos de los planes de estudios de Ingeniería Industrial en la Universidad de La Frontera. El análisis identifica temas que se alinean con los resultados de aprendizaje de la Educación para el Desarrollo Sostenible (EDS) y apoyan la implementación del modelo educativo de la universidad. Hallazgos El marco propuesto integra los resultados de aprendizaje de ocho ODS en 17 cursos dentro de los planes de estudios de Ingeniería Industrial. Los ODS más estrechamente alineados con los planes de estudios son el ODS 12, Consumo y Producción Responsables, y el ODS 8, Trabajo Decente y Crecimiento Económico. Esta alineación demuestra la compatibilidad de la EDS con el modelo educativo de la Universidad de La Frontera, haciendo hincapié en el desarrollo de agentes de cambio capacitados para afrontar los desafíos globales. Originalidad/valor Este análisis resalta el potencial de las universidades para impulsar la EDS al tiempo que cumplen sus objetivos estratégicos. Este estudio introduce un enfoque metodológico para integrar la EDS en los programas académicos, contribuyendo al logro del Objetivo 4.7 de la Agenda 2030 de la ONU mediante la adaptación de los currículos de una disciplina específica utilizando las directrices de la UNESCO.
