Zebrafish as a useful model for immunological research with potential applications in aquaculture

The Zebrafish (Danio Rerio) is a Teleost fish, which offers several practical advantages concerning manipulation, maintenance and versatility as well as short life cycle, low cost and physiological similarity with most farmed species. Zebrafish have been used as model for several aquaculture-relevant infectious agents, since the cost of infections to aquaculture can be great, making failure of immunity a major risk for commercial fish farming. This have allowed scientist to understand pathogens biology as well as fish immune response against infection, and thus have helped to improve disease control in aquaculture. This review summarizes the recent reports and main knowledge concerning the cellular and molecular aspects of the immune response in zebrafish and its potential applications in the fish farming industry. Several research results in zebrafish and other teleosts reveal that mucosal tissues have a strong and well-structured immune response involving both innate and adaptive components. Together with the advantages of low maintenance cost, easy handling and genetic tools available, zebrafish comes up as a useful and reliable animal model for invivo study of fish immune response and mechanisms as well as fish-affecting infectious and inflammatory diseases which are a cause of concern for the aquaculture industry. Also, vaccines development, drugs screening and immunologically focused fish food assessment seem to be promising fields where zebrafish model can be used to generate positive impacts to the aquaculture practice.

El pez cebra (Danio Rerio) es un pez teleósteo que ofrece diversas ventajas prácticas en cuanto a manipulación, mantenimiento y versatilidad, además de un ciclo de vida corto, bajo coste y similitud fisiológica con la mayoría de las especies de cultivo. El pez cebra se ha utilizado como modelo para diversos agentes infecciosos relevantes para la acuicultura, dado que el coste de las infecciones para la acuicultura puede ser elevado, lo que convierte el fallo inmunitario en un riesgo importante para la piscicultura comercial. Esto ha permitido a los científicos comprender la biología de los patógenos, así como la respuesta inmunitaria de los peces frente a las infecciones, lo que ha ayudado a mejorar el control de enfermedades en la acuicultura. Esta revisión resume los informes recientes y los principales conocimientos sobre los aspectos celulares y moleculares de la respuesta inmunitaria en el pez cebra y sus posibles aplicaciones en la industria piscícola. Diversos resultados de investigaciones en el pez cebra y otros teleósteos revelan que los tejidos mucosos presentan una respuesta inmunitaria fuerte y bien estructurada que involucra componentes tanto innatos como adaptativos. Junto con las ventajas de su bajo costo de mantenimiento, fácil manejo y la disponibilidad de herramientas genéticas, el pez cebra se presenta como un modelo animal útil y confiable para el estudio in vivo de la respuesta y los mecanismos inmunitarios de los peces, así como de las enfermedades infecciosas e inflamatorias que afectan a los peces y que son motivo de preocupación para la industria acuícola. Asimismo, el desarrollo de vacunas, el análisis de fármacos y la evaluación de alimentos para peces con enfoque inmunológico parecen ser campos prometedores donde el pez cebra puede utilizarse como modelo para generar impactos positivos en la práctica acuícola.
